If you hear the alarm

It's important to familiarise yourself with these procedures, the layout of the building and surrounding area. That way when the alarm sounds you can exit quickly and safely without panic.

Leave Immediately

All students and staff MUST leave the building immediately the fire alarm sounds, other than notified test. Evacuate the building calmly, close all windows and doors.

Do not stop to pack up personal possessions, and do not use the lifts. The rooms on each floor should be checked by a designated Fire Evacuation Marshall but this may not always be possible. It is up to you to act responsibly. Do not delay them in their duty.

If you are teaching or supervising, remember it is your duty of care to ensure that your students or visitors leave the building by the nearest fire escape and that they proceed to the Assembly Point. Please help by giving them directions and instructions.

Use the nearest Fire Exit

Remember that the way you entered the building is not necessarily the quickest way out the green Fire Exit signs will show you the quickest and most direct route of escape. In MPEB these are to the front corner and rear of the building and are shown here on the right.

Do not travel to upper floors or move against the flow of traffic.

Go to the Assembly Point

Once outside, keep moving away from the building towards the assembly point.
  1. There could be a risk of explosion, debris, fumes etc.
  2. We need to keep the space clear for the fire crew.
  3. We need to ensure that all occupants have been accounted for (this includes you and your colleagues)
  4. If the incident is severe, we may need to initiate other plans, such as temporary premises and need to communicate this to you.
If the area is becoming busy, find an alternative route rather than add to the blockage.

Await Further Instructions

Do not return to the building until you have been told it is safe to do so by the fire crew, a Fire Marshall, the Head of Department or a senior member of staff. Sometimes the alarm is switched off, but this does not mean it is safe to return.

The fire evacuation time for most of the buildings within College should be 3 minutes or less, during drills the average time taken 5-8 minutes. Three minutes is potentially a long time in the development and spread of a fire; it is essential that you leave immediately when you hear the alarm sound.

If you are located in another building around the campus, please let the Safety Officer know so we can ensure there is adequate Fire Evacuation Marshall coverage in that area. We will arrange this with the Senior Fire Evacuation Marshall for that building.

Disabilities

If you or a member of your staff have concerns about evacuating quickly due to disability or for any other reason, please contact the Safety Officer in order to discuss arrangements.
