Description of the project

The aim of this research project is the design of a reliable message oriented middleware system for delay tolerant mobile ad hoc networks. In this environment it is not always possible to apply the concepts and the techniques that are usually exploited in fixed scenarios; therefore, in order to achieve our design goals, we are studying novel approaches to deal with the complexity of this scenario.

In fact, ad hoc wireless networks are composed of hosts with scarce resources in terms of memory, battery power and computation capabilities and are characterized by continuous changes of the network topology. Moreover, temporary network partitions into clusters of nodes are possible and highly probable. Traditional synchronous routing protocols, such as AODV or DSDV, cannot be exploited to establish communication between two hosts belonging to different clusters. In this case a feasible solution can be the adoption of an asynchronous message delivery protocol.
Hence our goal is to design a middleware system based on both synchronous and asynchronous protocols for message delivery and on mechanisms to deal with the inherent uncertainty of the ad hoc scenario. For this reason, we are currently investigating the application of probabilistic and statistical techniques to design algorithms and protocols to improve the efficiency and the reliability of our platform.
Another interesting aspect of our project is the definition of mechanisms for the self-adaptation and self-optimization of the system. Our long-term research goal is the design of a real autonomic middleware platform for ad hoc wireless computing.
