UCL Careers Service

The UCL Careers Service is UCL's dedicated Careers Service and part of The Careers Group, University of London, the largest in the country. They provide a range of services for recruiters.

Advertising positions to our students

The UCL Careers Service provides services for employers to advertise vacancies. In particular, short descriptons of vacancies can be placed automatically on the JobOnline facility. Our students are aware of JobOnline and search it for current positions available.

Employers can also advertise using the Department's Careers Bulletin Board. Please email adverts in either plain text or PDF format to the Departmental Careers Tutor, Kevin Bryson with 'job advert' in the subject line. We normally like to include the following information:

  1. Name of employer
  2. Place of work (address)
  3. Full time or Part time
  4. Permanent or fixed term (if fixed term, please state for how long)
  5. Hours of work
  6. Job description
  7. Person description
  8. Salary or salary range
  9. Contact details for anyone who is interested in the position

It is best to write a proper job advert covering these points rather than just answering them as bullet points since your advert will be directly forwarded onto the bulletin board. The students like to know how much they will earn so it is best to give a range rather than just stating 'negotiable' - although this range can be as broad as you like and 'depending on experience'. The jobstat web site can be used to obtain information about competitive salary rates for different IT jobs.

Pertinent information about our students for employers

  • Our students are particularly encouraged to undertake summer internships to gain valuable work experience for future employment. The students are available during the Summer vacation which runs from approximately June to September each year.
  • Precise information about term time dates can be found here.
  • Weekly timetables for our students can be found here.
  • None of our courses are currently 'sandwich' courses, hence year long internships are generally not available to our students.
  • Advanced Masters students have exams in March whereas our MSc Computer Science, MSc Financial Computing and undergraduate students all have exams in May. The students are very busy with academic studies during and before these exam periods.

Partnerships with industry

Computer Science is very keen to talk to interested companies and organisations wishing to learn more about our research, teaching and our students.

Our supporters can benefit from their relationship with CS in a number of ways. In return for sponsorship from your company, we can set up initiatives including:

  • Student prizes or scholarships
  • Student project proposals and internships or placements
  • Publicity amongst our students for your company's activities and/or Placements and vacancies
  • Careers seminars with CS students
  • Sponsorship of a student as part of our "Year Abroad" scheme
  • Acknowledgement of your support in our Departmental publicity material
  • Access our information and expertise, subject to prior agreement

Further information can be found on our Business Pages.
