Agenda for the SSCC meeting November 24th 1999.

Robin Hirsch

The meeting will be held at 1:00 pm in room G00.

  1. Apologies for absence.
  2. Approval of minutes of the meeting of February 10th 1999.
  3. Matters arising.
  4. Proposal to change constitution: separate representatives for MRes and MSc VIVE and one graduate research student representative
  5. Undergraduate Issues:
    1. 1B14 double slot should have a longer break in the middle - e.g. >10 mins (M Rogers)
    2. halls of residence dont have enough internet access points and you can't use the phones to access free internet providers (M Rogers)
    3. Request for networked computers or at least connections for laptops in the student common room (M Rogers)
    4. Overcrowding in the undergraduate labs
    5. Amount of coursework in 1B11 and pace of course in 1B10 (R Bakhshi)
    6. Request for exam papers to be returned (A Mahdavi)
    7. Why are the second year lab always locked in the mornings until about 9.30? (A Mahdavi)
    8. Not enough computers in second year lab (A Mahdavi)
    9. Request for lockers for students (A Mahdavi)
    10. MACS2  (D Selvaratnam)- concern about the amount of coursework.  Also the amount of hours for lectures in the computer Science part of the course exceeds the normal 6 hours per week.!!!!
  6. DCNDS Issues (N Mahadeo)
    1. We would like BO1 to be opened later than 7:00 PM because we have a lot of  work requiring the use of the lab (but see previous minutes)
    2. A different structure to for our ZO1 coursework as it is given at the

    3. beginning and interferes with all our subsequent courses. So maybe the
coursework can be a bit shorter and simpler, concentrating on the FSP part and
be due in a shorter time. This way maybe we can do the course in one week and
have the next week to do the project/coursework. This way we can then fully
      focus on the other modules.
    4. The contents of ZO3 is too much!! It has to be reduced or spread to a

    5. different module to be practical.
    6. It would be nice to have a coffee machine in the building, as our little 5

    7. or 10 minute breaks are barely enough to get to a machine and buy cup of coffee (no time to drink it)
  7. M Res Issues (D Perperidis)
    1. Request for a PC with a disk drive in the lab
    2. Coffee machine
    3. Access to labs at weekends
    4. More machines in the MRes lab
    5. Problem with security guards asking students to leave before 11 or even 10pm
  8. MScCS issues (J Cheung)
    1. Lockers
    2. Anti-glare screen shields for the workstations
    3. More java books in the library
    4. Coffee machine
  9. Nominations for distinguished teacher of the year
  10. Feedback from the internal quality audit process
  11. Announcements.
  12. Any other business.
