Brief notes from 2nd year Bsc and Msci “wrap-up” session, 28 May 2002

Present:       20 students, Robin Hirsch (Chair), John Washbrook, Graham Roberts,  Bernard Buxton, Julie Burke

Points raised:

Interaction between EE and CS

There seems to be a lack of communication between EE and CS.  Some students were not aware of Option Days in other departments and students were not made aware when lectures were changing in EE704.

On-line feedback forms

When asked only 3 students had completed the on-line questionnaire.  A suggestion to encourage students to complete the questionnaire is to have a longer time limit to complete, as students were busy with exams when the questionnaire was published.

2nd Year Tutorials

Some students viewed Tutorial as ‘pointless’.

Bernard told the students what they should expect from a Tutorial:

Help with CV’s etc

Discussions

History of Computing

2nd year Options

Students view was that some of the courses seem pointless and choices are limited.

Robin let them know that all degrees need to be accredited and that one free option should be enough.

Students need to be aware that the options that they take this year will effect the choices that they make going onto the 4th year as some courses require pre-requisites.

Msci/Bsc Option

Robin told the 2nd years that once they have chosen to take the Msci then they have to stick to it otherwise they will be awarded a BSc Computing.

Exams

Students complained about the Exam Timetable as there are many exams close together, Robin informed the students that the Exam Timetable is set by the Registry and cannot be altered.
