Thesis Submission

When a student is nearly ready to submit their thesis for examination there are several stages in the process to be aware of.

  1. They must submit the Exam Entry form first.  This can be downloaded from the Registry and Academic Services webpagehttp://www.ucl.ac.uk/current-students/exams_and_awards/GI/res_deg_exam_entry.  If their registration began before 24th September 2007 then they have the choice to submit for either a UCL or UoL award; if registered in the first instance after this date they do not have a choice and can only submit for a UCL award.  You will need to sign this form as supervisor, and then pass it to the Postgraduate Administrators for the Graduate Tutor's signature.  NB: UCL advises that this form be submitted at least four months before thesis submission.

  2. Secondly, you need to complete the Examiners Nomination form.  See this page for more information on this procedure.

  3. When it comes to submitting the thesis students have to prepare two soft bound copies for the viva.  These two copies have to be submitted to Student Records, who are responsible for forwarding them to the approved examiners.  NB: Supervisors and students cannot send the viva copies directly to examiners themselves.  Students must submit their viva copies of the thesis to Registry and Academic Services with enough time for them to send it to the examiners (at least four weeks in advance of an oral examination).

Registry and Academic Services has put together a list of companies in London who bind theses.  Please see here

Students are advised to read their information on thesis formatting, binding, the summary of the examination process and the rest of the information on their pages concerning research degree submission.
