Preparing for New Students
Before the student arrives you should have arranged the following:
Desk Space - Once the start date of your student has been confirmed the Postgraduate Administrator will send notice to the Departmental Administrator, who will organise a desk space for them.
Computer and workspace materials - We aim to provide a hand-me-down machine for our new PhD students until their requirements are clear. Supervisors will need to liaise with the Computer Science Technical Support Group to get the workspace set up for when a student arrives - this should be done by sending an email to request@cs.ucl.ac.uk.
If a computer is to be purchased for the student, supervisors will also need to liaise with the TSG Administrator over the purchase of the machine. If the student is being funded by a project this must be paid for by the project.
For students, whose equipment is not covered by Research Council or a project grant or other funding source, the Department of Computer Science will provide a workstation. This purchase has to be firstly discussed with the student's supervisor & the Gradute Tutor (all research students will only get bought equipment once). Once it's been agreed, the primary supervisor should send their specifications to the Computer Science Technical Support Group (cc to Anthony Hunter, the Graduate Tutor, & postgradadmin@cs.ucl.ac.uk), who will provide a quote and organise the purchase.
Enrolment
The student will first have to officially enrol with Student Records and then see the Postgraduate Administrator to register with the department.
You should arrange to meet with the student in their first week, the main reasons for this first meeting are to:
1. establish a timetable of regular meetings, at least twice a term and
2. induct the student in effective use of the Graduate Student Log.
After One Month
If you have not already done so, a suitable topic of research must be agreed by this point.
After Three Months
The basic structure of the research project, and appropriate research method, a realistic plan of work and any additional required study including Skills Development Training must be agreed by this point. You should also have appointed a second supervisor.
