Departmental Policy

It was decided in the September 2010 review of CS Admissions procedures to schedule all interviews immediately following the first panel, and to make sure that all take place before the second meeting.  This is with the aim of speeding up the process by which decisions are made, ensuring candidates' applications are dealt with as quickly as possible and not left waiting.

Interviews for the January candidates should be scheduled between 17th January and 7th February.

Interviews for the May candidates should be scheduled between 30 April and 17th May.

Interview Procedure

Applicants must be interviewed by at least 2 members of staff - the prospective supervisor and an experienced PhD supervisor (normally the Head of Research Group of the prospective supervisor). Ideally the interview should be done in person, however overseas applicants are normallly given a telephone interview, using a speakerphone, or via Skype.

Please download an interview form here - you will need your CS account and password. A separate interview form needs to be filled out by each interviewer.  Please do leave comments rather than just circling numbers - it really does help the panel meetings to come to a decision about a candidate if/when the interviewers themselves are not in attendance.

After the interview:

  • If you wish to reject, please return completed interview forms to the Postgraduate Administrator. Make sure that interviewers mark clearly the reason for rejection. Please note that lack of funding is NOT an acceptable reason for rejection. If the student reaches the required academic standards and you are able to take on new students you should supply an unfunded offer.
