Extenuating Circumstances
Please inform the Research Student Administrator and the Graduate Tutor as soon as you become aware that a student is having problems with their programme of study. The Graduate Tutor will discuss how to proceed with the supervisor and/or the student depending on circumstances.
There are two main options we can pursue if a student is having problems:
- Interruption of study (see below).
- Change to part time status. This is for UK residents only: overseas students are not allowed to remain in the UK with part-time student status. Please note also that students cannot change to part time once on CRS status, so they must transfer to part-time before they go on CRS.
Interruption of Studies
Interruption of Study is for students who require taking a temporary break from their studies and plan to resume them at a future date. The minimum amount of time that can be recorded is one month; the maximum length of time a student can interrupt for is 24 months. See the Registry and Academic Services website for further information.
This should be applied for if a student is unable to continue their studies for one month or more. During this time the student will have to relinquish their desk and may not receive their stipend if on a studentship. Students may receive up to thirteen weeks paid sick leave within the duration of their award. Students that hold a Tier 4 visa will be required to leave the UK for the duration of their interruption and re-apply for a new visa in order to return to UCL and continue their studies.
Please note that funded students may not be able to receive funding on their return from interruption, if they go beyond the length of their programme grant. Please could you check this with Dawn Bailey before you request an interruption?
To request an interruption for your student, please email the Research Student Administrator with the following details, and they will make the request to Student Records:
- Start Date of Interruption
- End Date of Interruption
- Reason for Interruption
Please be aware that under new immigration laws, UCL is responsible for knowing the location of its students and informing the Home Office of any change in status. This means that Registry and Academic Services CAN NO LONGER BACK-DATE INTERRUPTIONS, so it is important that you inform us as soon as possible.
Maternity and Paternity Leave is processed the same as any other interruption. Students on a studentship are allowed up to four months paid maternity leave. Paternity leave is 10 days, which may be taken may be taken at any time during a partner’s pregnancy or within three months following the birth.
