Appointment of Examiners

Before you fill in the form, please:

  • make sure the student has submitted the exam entry form, as this should be submitted first
  • find out whether the student will be submitting for a UCL or University of London degree
  • make an informal agreement with your chosen examiners to establish that they are willing to be nominated
  • obtain detailed information on each examiner, especially the number of PhDs they have examined and how many of these were London degrees.
Registry and Academic Services will not process the form until you have provided detailed examination experience of both examiners.

GUIDANCE on nominating examiners can be downloaded here and FAQs (such as how long it takes to get a nomination approved) can be downloaded here

Forms for both University of London and UCL awards can be downloaded from the bottom of this Registry and Academic Services site here.

Once you have completed the form please return it to the Research Student Administrator in 5.22. She will then get the Graduate Tutor's signature and forward it on to Registry and Academic Services.

For further information related to Research Degree Exams, including examiner report forms, please refer to the Registry and Academic Services pages here.

Please note that the examiner recruitment procedures and forms have changed. Students can now choose between a UCL or University of London degree. There are two major changes in the nomination process: 1. Forms There is a different form for each degree (look at the sections below), please make sure you fill out the correct one, and carefully follow the guidelines on the form. 2. Definition of Internal and External For a University of London degree, Internal Examiners can still be from the whole of University of London. For a UCL degree, an Internal Examiner must be from within UCL. Staff from other University of London colleges are considered External Examiners. This means that for a UCL degree there are fewer people to choose from, so it may be necessary to nominate two externals. If you wish to do this, please make sure you have a strong case for doing so and provide a statement in the box provided on the form.
