Welcome to the MPhil/PhD pages

These pages collect together the information you need to organise your research degree in the Computer Science Department. We try to make sure that all the information you need is available and up-to-date. However, if you cannot find what you need, or you have suggestions for improvement, then do please tell us!

Below you will find an index and explanations of the information you have access to through these pages.

For the induction schedule for new research students starting in September 2012 see here.

Index of Research Student Pages

  • Key Contacts: who the key staff associated with the PhD programme are.
  • Survival Guide: this is quite a general guide aimed at issues facing all students in the department.  It includes things like department guidelines - e.g. on ID cards, smoking etc - and information on equal opportunities, computer facilities etc.  If you have a more specific query about the PhD programme or your studies you may find that it has been answered in the the Research Student FAQs section or in the Administrative Forms and Guidance section for research students.
  • Programme Outline: this is intended to provide new (and current) research students with information about the structure of the MPhil/PhD programme in the department of Computer Science, with the key milestones, roles of supervisors and the Graduate Tutor, and methods of assessment explained.
  • Research Student FAQs: this should be your first port of call if you have a general question about something.  If you feel an issue is not addressed here let us know - the FAQs is an ever-growing work in progress that always benefits from your contribution!
  • CS Facilities: visitors, personal workspaces, photocopying, stationary etc.
  • Training and Skills Development: an explanation of what is available through the department and the graduate school, and of the requirements for PhD students (e.g. Roberts Points).
  • Research Log: information about and links to the Graduate School's Research Log - an online system for monitoring academic and skills development which is mandatory for research students as part of a UCL PhD.
  • Administrative Forms and Guidelines (Students): here you will find the forms required at both departmental and college level throughout your programme (e.g. for the first year and upgrade viva) and information on interrupting, transfering to 'Completing Research Status' - i.e. writing up - and thesis submission, as well as the UCL Research Student Code of Practice.
