In the early 70s, Prof. Kirstein started the first European ARPANET node with transatlantic IP connectivity, and has been involved ever since, with European and transatlantic collaborations on IP networking research. Most of the collaborations have been with both industrial and academic partners. Amongst these activities are developments in multimedia, network management, directory and security applications, and piloting them in the Research Community in Europe and elsewhere.
From 1980-94, he was the first Head of the Department of Computer Science, whereas he is now leading the department's collaborative activities as a Director of Research. Prof. Kirstein has been leading research projects in computer communications - mostly in collaboration with European and US colleagues.
Peter was associated for many years with the US General Electric Research Laboratory in Schenectady, USA. He has consulted with many companies and Government organisations on both sides of the Atlantic. He is a Director of the UK Virtual Centre of Excellence in Digital Broadcasting.
Peter has been a Fellow of the UK Royal Academy of Engineering, the British Computer Society, the Institute of Physics, and the Institution of Electrical Engineering. He is a Senior Member of the Institution of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). He has written some 170 papers and one book. Prof. Kirstein received the 1999 SIGCOMM Award for his contribution to the international development of the Internet.
Peter's current research interests are: Multimedia conferencing components
and systems, security infrastructures, in multimedia, heterogeneous integrated
service networks, active leads the UCL activity in several other Active
network (ANDROID, RADIOACTIVE) and IPv6 projects (6NET and BERMUDA).
He currently directs the EC 6WINIT project on IPv6 wireless access to the
Internet and IP Mobility.
