Research

I work with Tony Hunter on an EPSRC project “Structured Text Analysis: Addressing Inconsistency in Heterogeneous Information” (ref. GR/R55559/01), developing logical fusion rules (no frames) for merging potentially inconsistent sets of structured text reports. This involves developing an XML mark-up language for the fusion rules, a Prolog knowledgebase, and a Java implementation of a prototype fusion engine that merges structured text reports according to those rules and the knowledgebase.

Two case studies have been developed. The first concerns weather reports and includes a knowledgebase and five sets of fusion rules embodying a wide variety of aggregation functions for dealing with conflicting information. The second case study concerns bioinformatics, and is part of a collaboration with the Department of Biochemistry. It deals with merging the functional annotations of protein domains.

This project is part of The NewsTools Project, an umbrella project aimed at developing tools for analysing and merging news reports that are represented in the form of structured text.
