Draft Minutes for final BT URI MMN Project Attendees: Ian Leslie, Cambridge Brian Cowe, Cambridge Iain Phillips, Loughborough ?????? Loughborough Laurent Mathy, Lancaster Mark Banfield Lancaster Ian Marshall BT Hamid Gharib BT Jon Crowcroft UCL Morris Sloman IC DOC Nat Pryce IC DOC --------------------------- 1. Jon ran thru a history of the project and suggested that it had been a success. When measured aggainst past projects invovleing some of the partmers (e.g. Universe, Unison, Admiral) - Universe (1981) was about 2M pounds, which by today's standards is simply a massive project compared to the URI - yet we have achieved quite a lot in comparison, and have influenced the ATM Forum, the IETF, several switch and router companies, the course of network and systems management, a major servive provider and so on. We also finished on budget and on time! 2. Lougborough - Iain Phillips described the last pieces of work and then linked to.... ...Cambridge, Ian Leslie described the cambridge dial-a-network work, and linked to Brian Cowe ... ...who described how the Loughborough measurement system would be linked to the cambridge configuration system to allow refinement (especially for open-ended SLA type specified virtual setups). Laurent described Dan Waddington's work on the Nt VM resource management system. Nat described the more formal specification part of the IC DOC work, and the opening up of the interfaces to allow other annotations to the specificatons in their softare. 3. The partners agreed that a final report of all the works and related works of all the partners should be gathered together. Jon agreed to drive this in early next year, and edit it together into a printed, and a slightly different CD-ROM (and web) form to be distributed to BT, partners, interested parties, and to the JISC, EPSRC and UKERNA as a final project wrapup. 4. Ian Marshall described the demos that had happened i nBT showing of our 'wares to Richard Nichol. The last one to run is now the Cambridge/Loughborough one, which is scheduled in the next couple of months. THis would represent a timely closure to the project, and all claims and patent applications should be tied up within this timeframe to allow us to make a clean getaway. UCL's work done IC DOCS work done Lancaster + UTS work done Cambridge/Loughborough done, but integrated demo still to happen 5. Ian Marshall then outlined the views from BT on the overall project. The conclusion was that the project had been an unqualified success, and that this is probably a first for a BT University Research Initiative. Ian's Measures for Success + points papers produced and conference/workshop invovlement - a lot patents - several influence - very large - point no people moved from the project to BT [aside, he encouraged us to explain to BT via him why - one obvious reason sonme of us suggested might be salary. BT is not competetive with the newcomers in the arena in the UK, nor is the UK engineer's salary competetive with the rest of Europe, let alone any where near that in the US]. Ian's Lessons for good URI Projects stable management is important 5 year programs are a good idea Strong BT contribution is important Some technical points before after ATM IPv6 Corba XML and Policy Meta Data operator control of services User Control of network services Some outcomes directly from the project LEARNET Android Caspian OMG streaming Alpine Liberty AOB Action all to send slides to UCL for web page Action all to respond to Jon's requests in January 2000 for softcopy (word, latex, framemaker etc) of papers and indication of whether for printed project proceedings, online/CD project knowledgebase or both.
