Uncertainty, Incompleteness, Imprecision and Conflict in Multiple Data Sources
An affiliate workshop to ECSQARU’03
Scope With the wide spread use of the Internet at the moment and the grid computing in the future, the number of information resources (including legacy ones) that can be used for solving a problem or answering a query, can be enormous. One task involved in this process is to identify the relevant information sources (through metadata) that directly contribute to the problem solving (or query answering). Another is to handle information in these sources that may be imprecise, incomplete, data values that may be uncertain, and knowledge (or data) from multiple sources that may contradict with each other. Probabilistic information handling for prioritising accesses to multiple information sources and query optimisation involving schema conflicts from multiple sources are just two examples that demonstrate the importance of dealing with uncertainty in this environment. With the primary focus of the workshop on dealing with all aspects of uncertainty in data, metadata, information, and knowledge when multiple sources are required, it is expected that some challenge issues to the Uncertainty Research community would be identified.

Structure: The proposed workshop is a one day event.
Proceedings: The best 4-6 papers accepted in the Workshop will be invited for modification, extension and submission to a special issue in The Journal of Applied Non-Classical Logics. The journal submissions will undergo a review process before acceptance.

Submission of papers: Authors are invited to submit extended abstracts not exceeding 10 pages (LaTeX 12-point article-style pages). An extended abstract can be a position paper or a summary of a full paper. A position paper may be a viewpoint on a controversial topic or a summary of lessons learned from recent research or practical experience. An abstract of a full paper may be a description of a new formalism, mechanism, or architecture, a product or prototype, an application, or results of work in progress. The extended abstracts will be reviewed with focus on relevance and potential contribution to discussions.
We strongly encourage electronic submissions. Email submissions as self-contained standard Postscript or PDF attachments should be sent by April 4th , 2003 to Weiru Liu (w.liu@ulster.ac.uk). Authors unable to submit papers electronically should send 3 copies of the complete paper by April 4th, 2003 to Dr. Weiru Liu, School of Computing and Mathematics, University of Ulster at Jordanstown, Shore Road, Newtownabbey, Co.
