Background

I received my 'Diplom' in computer science from the University of Hamburg in 1999. During and after my years at U of Hamburg I worked as an information architect, database designer and as a consultant for SAT1 and Sport1 in Germany.

Before starting my PhD at UCL, I worked in the Interactive Cognition Lab at UCSD for two years on distributed collaboration on an ONR funded project. Previous incarnations have seen me working as a part-time photographer (Ahrensburger Zeitung), DJ (Zillo/Tonwerk), game inventor (kick ran, various quizzes and CD-ROM products), editor (ran SAT1 fanguide), and football analytical observer and statistician (IMP).

I started my PhD research on User Experience in mobile multimedia applications in February 2004 funded by a European Integrated Project called MAESTRO, which aimed to deliver multimedia content through a satellite digital broadcast (SDMB). The goal of this project was to provide mobile pre-stored television. In order to research user requirements we built a demonstrator version of this service and have been using it in various experiments in the lab and the field. Most of my PhD research focussed on mobile TV. In case you do not find what you are looking for in terms of mobile TV requirements I suggest to consult Jumisko-Pyykkö's work on mobile TV and user experience.

From March 2006 to October 2008 I worked on UNIC, a European Union funded STREP project. In this project my colleague Will Seager and I together with Angela Sasse were looking at user requirements in TV centric services (i.e. are delivered through the TV by means of a set top box) and include amongst others: email, web browsing, telephony, video conferencing, internet and standard and high definition TV services (passive and interactive).

I have reviewed for conferences (IWQoS, ACM Multimedia, CHI, EuroITV) and journals (Convergence, Decision Support Systems, Springer's Multimedia Tools and Applications Series and Annals of telecommunication).

I enjoy being on the program committee uxTV and EuroITV conference (2007-) and have been involved in various workshops and tutorials on Quality of Experience in mobile TV (EuroITV'06), TV-centric services (2008), TV-centric UX (EuroITV'09), Mobile UX (CHI'09) and QoEMCS (EuroITV'10). I co-chaired the Doctoral Consortium at EuroITV'10. And I'm program chair of the EuroITV 2012 in Berlin (hosted by FOKUS Fraunhofer) together with Jan Hess from University of Siegen.
