Universität Wien

Institute Name: Universität Wien, Institute of Applied Computer Science and Information Systems

Description: The Institute of Applied Computer Science and Information Systems of the University of Vienna has about 25 permanent academic staff. Courses in computer science are offered for master and PhD. students. The Institute is divided into four departments, Advanced Computer Engineering, Data Engineering, Knowledge Engineering, and Information Engineering. The last one will contribute to this project. The Information Engineering Lab focuses on database systems (security issues, multimedia databases, object-oriented databases) and on software engineering (reuse, process-driven software development, relationships between CSCW and software engineering, reverse engineering). About ten researchers work on these topics. The Information Engineering Lab has participated in the following research projects: RACE Europublishing, expert system KONTERM, KOBOLD - ooDBS Technology for KBL, CIRCE - Evaluation of Object-Oriented Database Systems, ITS - Improvements of Text Retrieval Systems, Natural Language Interfaces to Deductive Database Systems. The Information Engineering Lab cooperates with the following research institutions: Technical University Lingby, Denmark, Gesellschaft fuer Mathematik und Datenverarbeitung, Germany, University of Kyoto, Japan, Universite de Geneve, Switzerland, Georgia Institute of Technology, USA, University of Houston-Downtown, USA.
