University of Tampere

Institute Name: University of Tampere, Department of Computer Science

Description: The Department of Computer Science of the University of Tampere was founded in 1965, with the establishment of the first professorship in computer science in Scandinavia. It employees 20 people as permanent staff and about 10 research associates. The University of has close co-operation with the Technical University of Tampere, particularly in the area of computer science.

The major research activities of the department concern data management, information systems design, social effects of computing, object-oriented systems, and user interfaces. The department is participating in several major national research projects, yet several members of its staff have international research co-operations. Recently a special laboratory has been established at the department for the empirical investigation of the usability of software systems.

The department will contribute to this project doing research in conceptual modelling of information systems (COMIC), designing dynamic models of OO software (SCED), and developing methods for designing and documenting OO frameworks (FDD).

Researchers associated with the project:

Prof. Kai Koskimies Dr. Erkki MŠkinen Assoc. Prof. Hannu Kangassalo

Brief CVs of Key Researchers:

Name: Prof. Kai Koskimies

Nationality: Finnish

Academic Qualifications & Experience: Prof. Koskimies had been working in the area of language implementation. During the last few years his research interests have been moved to areas related to OO software engineering. He has been the leader of a large national project on object-oriented methods and languages and now he is the leader of the SCED(study of automated tools for deriving dynamic models of OO systems) and the TaLE (developing a toolkit for OO language implementation.) projects. Currently, he is a visiting researcher at the University of Linz, Austria, where he is developing tools for designing and documenting OO frameworks.

Name: Prof. Hannu Kangassalo

Nationality: Finnish

Academic Qualifications & Experience: Hannu Kangassalo is an associate professor. He has been working on information systems design and conceptual modelling, and conducted research and development of an integrated support system, called COMIC, for information system and/or data base design, for several years . The COMIC system supports the elicitation and acquisition of knowledge concerning the application field (UoD) from users, the creation, storage and manipulation of conceptual schemas of IS, the implementation of IS, and the usage of conceptual schemas as user interfaces for corresponding application data bases. A user can work by using the concepts of UoD without knowing data base technology or data models. A prototype of the system was implemented in a large national project, in which Kangassalo was the leader. Kangassalo has been active in IFIP WG 8.1 and ER-conferences, and in arranging conferences on Information Modelling and Knowledge Bases.
