University of Linz

Institute Name: University of Linz

Description: The Department of Applied Computer Science at the Johannes Kepler University of Linz is one of the leading centers of software engineering, data engineering and knowledge processing. It has a strong commitment to applied computer science with a profound theoretical background. The department consists of 7 permanent faculty members and 6 doctorial students. Not only due to the location of the University within an area of many high-tech SMEs, the department has a strong industrial project record as well as a strong commitment to knowledge transfer. Its teaching record includes courses on information systems at Master Thesis level and PhD level for Computer Science. The Department is organised into two research and teaching sections: The two sections which will contribute to this project are the Information Systems section and the Information Systems in Business, Administration and Society section. The Information Systems section comprises 5 permanent faculty members and 4 doctoral students. The main focus of research of the Information Systems section can be summarized as integrated information systems with applications in CSCW and CIM. Within this domain, they concentrate basic research in the areas of active object-oriented database systems, object- oriented requirements engineering and design, open hypermedia systems, and database WWW connectivity. The applied research efforts investigate workflow management and business process modeling, integration aspects in CIM, and cooperative electronic publishing. The Information Systems in Business, Administration and Society section comprises 2 permanent faculty members, 2 research associates, and 2 doctoral students. The main focus of research of the Information Systems in Business, Administration and Society section is on analysis and design of information systems, information systems in public administration, computer-supported cooperative work, and human-computer interaction. Both sections have jointly pursued interests in requirements engineering over a considerable period and have participated in european and national research projects in this area. Research projects with requirements engineering content held by members of the group include: ITHACA, Integrated Toolkit for Highly Advanced Computer Applications (funded by the European Commission); KOBOLD, Object-Oriented Database Support for a Knowledge-Based Leitstand (funded by the European Commission); MooD, Methods for Object-Oriented Development (funded by SIEMENS AG Austria); TIS, Toursim Information Systems (funded by a private Austrian/German consortium).

Researchers associated with the project:

Prof. Dr. Kappel, Prof. Dr. Traunmüller, Dr. Gross, Dr. Reich, Dr. Retschitzegger

Academic Qualifications & Experience: Gerti Kappel is Full Professor for Information Systems at the Department of Applied Computer Science at the University of Linz in Austria. Her main areas of research are in Software Engineering (object-oriented software development, object-oriented process models, reusability, software quality metric), in Information Systems (object-oriented database systems, active database systems, distributed information systems, multi-media systems), and in Non-Standard Application Areas (Workflow Systems, Computer Integrated Manufacturing, Integrated Project Support Environments). She has been involved in two ESPRIT projects on the development of methods and tools for object-oriented software development, and on applying object-oriented database technology to CIM. She works in close collaboration with industry applying object-oriented technology to non-standard applications.
