Universität-GH Essen

Institute Name: Universität - Gesamthochschule - Essen, Department of Mathematics and Computer Science

Description: The University of Essen is one of the four large universities in Ruhr, an area in Western Germany (Nordrhein-Westfalen) known for its heavy industry, which currently undergoes great changes regarding industrial structures and employment. The university has 13 departments including a large medical department and hospitals. The subjects studied by its 20.000 enrolled students range from natural science, engineering and medicine to sociology and teacher education. Currently, 400 professors and 1000 full time academic staff are employed at the University.

The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science offers a degree in mathematics. Computer science can be chosen as a minor subject by a number of degrees. Plans for offering an applied computer science degree as well are in preparation. The department has 30 professors and 50 full time academic staff. It also includes an institute for experimental mathematics. The covered research areas in computer science include software engineering and system modelling.

In the software engineering section, a fairly large group has been involved in rapid prototyping and development of software components. A considerable part of this work is funded from external sources. Recently, research in the section addresses issues in the areas of mobile computing, and design of distributed systems.

Prof. Dr. M Goedicke

Brief CVs of Key Researchers:

Name: Prof. Dr. M. Goedicke

Nationality: Deutsch

Academic Qualifications & Experience: Michael Goedicke is currently a Professor for Practical Computer Science with emphasis on Specification of Software Systems. Professor Goedicke has established one of the two research sections within the department of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Essen. Before this affiliation he served as full-time research and teaching assistant at the Dept. of Computer Science of the University of Dortmund for nearly 10 years. During that time he was involved in a major Esprit I Project (PEACOCK) as leading investigator (site manager). Later he served as a professor substitutor at the University of Essen for nearly four years. He also worked for a medium sized software house and the Fraunhofer Institute for Software and System Technology in Dortmund. While being a professor substitutor, he finished his habilitation covering work on comparing software component concepts and pursued a small project involving the graphical animation of algorithms and software engineering techniques for teaching purposes.

His current research activities include systematic design of software development methods, component concepts for constructing software systems especially in the area of distributed and interactive systems.
