Engineering - Ingegneria Informatica

Institute Name: Engineering - Ingegneria Informatica

Description: Ingegneria Informatica ( referred to as Engineering, henceforth) is one of the largest Italian software houses and the leader of the Engineering Group (900 people and revenues of 100 billion lire in 1993). Engineering has a staff of about 420 people and its revenues in the past year were of 70 billion lire. Its capital is entirely private. Furthermore, it does not have a captive market. Engineering offers custom software, facilities management, software packages, and its own methodology and training services. It offers software products on the market, some of which it has developed itself (e.g., Endelon, Engipec) and others for which it acts as a distributor such as O2 DBMS by O2 Technology (F), Burogest and Burosyst by Tao (E), System Architect by Popkin Software and System (USA), RE-Vision by Eden System (USA).

Engineering has a number of joint ventures, aimed at technology transfer, with European and US companies such as Cort (F), GFI (F) and the Stanford Research Institute International (US).

Eleven branch offices ensure the company's presence throughout the Italian market. Engineering is basically a project-oriented organization, whose activities mainly concern the building of customized solutions for large organizations. It does much work for the banking, insurance sectors, but also for the local and cenral Italian governments.

In 1987, Engineering equipped a R&D software laboratory at Pomezia (Roma). The lab has been involved in various national and international research projects through which it has gained experience in a number of areas such as:

- Software Engineering (Software Process & Product Modeling, Computer & Human Interaction, Object-Oriented languages and DBMS, Rapid Prototyping, Semi-automatic generation of compilers and interpreters, Tools Integration);

- Enterprise Modeling;

- Workflow Management.

The lab has developed various research prototypes in the above areas and has published almost 30 papers in national and international conference proceedings and journals.

Engineering is currently involved as Coordinating Contractor in the Esprit projects P6115 "GOODSTEP" and P7089 "RECYCLE", and, as a Partner, in SQUID.
