University of Dublin, Trinity College

Institute Name: University of Dublin, Trinity College, Department of Computer Science

Description: Trinity College Dublin (TCD) was founded in 1592 as the first (and only) constituent College of the University of Dublin. The Department of Computer Science, which is in the School of Engineering, is the largest department in the university with over 120 academic and research staff. The Department is very active in research in many areas, covering virtually the whole field of Computer Science, with an annual research income of approximately £1.5 million.

The work in this project will be carried out by the Knowledge and Data Engineering Group (KDEG) in the Department of Computer Science. The principal research interests of KDEG are databases, in particular heterogeneous distributed databases, knowledge-based systems, multimedia and healthcare informatics. KDEG currently has 3 academic staff memebrs, 6 research assistants and 10 postgraduate students.

KDEG has participated in several EU and nationally funded research projects including MIPS, VENUS and EDITH under the Esprit 3 Programme, OpenLabs, Menelas and KAVAS under the Advanced Informatics in Medicine Programme and ADVANCE and DESSERT under the RACE Programme.

KDEG brings to the project several years experience in user requirements capture in the health domain. KDEG played a leading role in the OpenLabs project, funded under the Advanced Informatics in Medicine (AIM) Programme of the EU. Its aim was to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the hospital laboratory through the application of advanced knowledge-based systems and telematics in an open distributed environment. The capture and verification of user requirements both inside and outside the hospital laboratory was a very important part of this project, as it was in other AIM Projects in which the Group has been involved. Also of relevance to this project is KDEG's research into hypermedia systems as part of the MIPS Esprit Project.
