Institute Name: Lehrstuhl Informatik V (Information Systems), RWTH AachenDescription: With about 9.000 researchers, RWTH Aachen is one of the largest technical univiersities worldwide. It is engaged in a wide range of engineering activities which require substantial database and knowledge-base support. The Information Systems group (Informatik V), led by Prof. Matthias Jarke, focuses on the development and conceptual integration of such systems in integrated information systems for design environments and organizations. The Chair sees its role firstly in the training of students and researchers, second in the creation and dissemination of interdisciplinary knowledge in engineering and organizational information systems, and last not least in the prototypical technology development and its transfer to industrial usage. These goals have been pursued through presentations, demonstrations, and joint projects, including the ESPRIT projects DAIDA (technical management), MULTIWORKS, COMPULOG, ITHACA (consultant), and NATURE (coordinating partner), as well as European-Australian and European-Canadian collaboration projects.

Brief CVs of Key Researchers:
Name: Prof. Dr. Matthias Jarke
Nationality: German
Academic Qualifications & Experience: Matthias Jarke is a professor of Information Systems at the Technical University of Aachen, Germany, and currently chairman of the computer science department. After studying business and informatics and receiving his doctorate at the University of Hamburg, he held faculty positions at New York University, the University of Frankfurt and the University of Passau before joining Aachen. In his research, he is currently interested in meta information systems that integrate heterogeneous systems and processes running on these systems. Projects in his group investigate technological foundations as well as applications of such systems in areas such as Software Engineering, Production Engineering, Medical Information Systems, Telecommunications, and Chemical Engineering. More than a hundred publications, patent applications, and commercial products result from this work. The ConceptBase deductive object-oriented database prototype developed in his group is widely used by research groups throughout the world. Jarke has been scientific coordinator of two ESPRIT projects, DAIDA and NATURE. Since 1994, he is European Editor of the database journal, INFORMATION SYSTEMS, and has chaired programme committees in the fields of databases (EDBT, VLDB), distributed systems (CoopIS), business information systems (WITS), and operations research (DGOR).
Name: Dr. Klaus Pohl
Nationality: German
Academic Qualifications & Experience: Klaus Pohl studied Informatics at the FH Karlsruhe and Information Science at the Universitaet Konstanz where he participated in research projects in knowledge representation and automated knowledge acquisition from natural language text. Since 1990 he has worked as a research assistant in the group of Matthias Jarke where he led the Aachen team within the NATURE ESPRIT project. He received his PhD. in 1995.
