RENOIR Visit Report to Uinversity College, London

Mehdi Jazayeri, TU Vienna

I visited the group of Professor Anthony Finkelstein at the University College London. The purpose of the visit was to find out about
Anthony's group's current work and the future directions of Renoir.

I met with Anthony, Dr. Wolfgang Emmerich, Stefano Antonelli, and a postdoctoral fellow who had just arrived from Vienna! The
main work that I saw involved the monitoring of a project for deviation from process standards. The idea is that if a project is
supposed to follow a particular standard in their processes, such as MIL-STD-2197, it is important to allow deviations from the standard but be aware of the amount of deviation. For a variety of reasons, deviations should be allowed but uncontrolled deviations are a sure recipe for disaster. At UCL, they are developing a protoype tool based on the DOORS requirements engineering tool for monitoring standards compliance. The user can define the requirements of the standard in DOORS. This is a rather clever use of a requirements engineering tool. The tool is currently a single-user version and ovisouly will need to be extended for use in projects that consist of more than one
member.

My thanks to Anthony and his colleagues for their warm hospitality and the demo.
