Abstract

The objectives of the project "Programmable Active Networks for Next Generation Multimedia Services" was to get an insight in past and on-going PAN activities in research and standardisation and to identify business opportunities for a PAN system by investigating several application scenarios of next generation multimedia services that look promising for satellite networks and evaluate whether to base the respective scenario on a PAN system is beneficial.

Having obtained knowledge about PAN trends and business opportunities, a key objective of the project was to investigate a PAN system realisation in a satellite network. Therefore, a suitable PAN approach was selected and its integration aspects were analysed from a general point of view and for three promising application scenarios in particular. Thereby, of special interest was to investigate how to realise and integrate PAN in the space segment.

In order to benchmark the theoretical analysis performed and to get a deeper insight into issues of a real network, two application scenario demonstrations were set up and performed on a common PAN platform in a testbed environment.
