UCL PhD student wins Google Fellowship

UCL PhD student; recipient of prestigious 2019 Google Fellowship in Quantum Computing

We are delighted to announce that UCL Computer Science student, Leonard Wossnig, has been awarded the 2019 Google Fellowship in Quantum Computing.  These awards are presented to exemplary PhD students in computer science and related disciplines. Google awards these students unique fellowships to acknowledge their contributions to their areas of speciality and provide funding for their education and research.

The Fellowship is highly prestigious, very competitive and a truly fantastic achievement for Leo and the department. It is also the first time one of our students has managed to obtain this fellowship in the area of Quantum Computing; in the past we’ve been successful in other areas such as Machine Perception (in 2016), Natural Language Processing and Machine Learning (both in 2017).

Further praise of this outstanding achievement was noted in the letter announcing the award where it was stated; "Student nominations we received were exemplary in their quality, but Leonard especially stood out and was endorsed by the research scientists and distinguished engineers within Google who participated in the review."
