Changing the domain names
The naming of the departmental web servers is to change so that the main www.cs.ucl.ac.uk name applies to the "TYPO3" server. This is desirable since the bulk of departmental pages are now on the TYPO3 server and the "www-typo3" name currently in use is non-intuitive and widely disliked.
The principal effects will be:
1. Pages currently on the TYPO3 server.
These have URLs starting http://www-typo3.cs.ucl.ac.uk. After the change these URLs will start with http://www.cs.ucl.ac.uk.
Thus http://www-typo3.cs.ucl.ac.uk/students/ will become http://www.cs.ucl.ac.uk/students/.
Redirects will be in place so that the old http://www-typo3.cs.ucl.ac.uk/... URLs will still work. For example the URL http://www-typo3.cs.ucl.ac.uk/students/ will redirect to http://www.cs.ucl.ac.uk/students/.
Effectively the www-typo3 name will no longer be used (though links that do use it will still work).
2. Pages currently on the CERN server.
These have URLs starting http://www.cs.ucl.ac.uk. After the change these URLs will start with http://www0.cs.ucl.ac.uk. (www0 is an arbitrary choice - we are open to suggestions as to better names).
Thus http://www.cs.ucl.ac.uk/staff/J.Shawe-Taylor/ will become http://www0.cs.ucl.ac.uk/staff/J.Shawe-Taylor/.
Redirects will be in place so that existing http://www.cs.ucl.ac.uk/... URLs will still work. For example the URL http://www.cs.ucl.ac.uk/staff/J.Shawe-Taylor/ will redirect to http://www0.cs.ucl.ac.uk/staff/J.Shawe-Taylor/.
With this approach the "www0" URL will appear in the browser's address box when one of these pages is viewed. It may be possible to eliminate this effect in some cases in the future.
3. Pages already redirected
As pages were moved from the CERN server to the TYPO3 server redirects were put in place so that the old CERN URLs still worked. For example http://www.cs.ucl.ac.uk/research.html was redirected to http://www-typo3.cs.ucl.ac.uk/research/. These old CERN URLs will continue to work but the "www-typo3" name will no longer appear.
