Abstract

Medical imaging has revolutionised medicine over the last century. I will talk about the essential role of Computer Science in modern medical imaging and image analysis - from image formation, to information extraction, to understanding the body in health and disease. UCL's Centre for Medical Image Computing (CMIC) combines researchers in Computer Science and Medical Physics focussed on developing engineering advances in medical imaging technologies. It provides a vital link with the hospitals and clinical research groups in and around UCL enabling those technological advances to reach clinical research and ultimately patients. I will talk through some examples of how CMIC's work, exploiting the latest computer science, impacts on our understanding, management, and treatment of some of the biggest challenges facing 21st Century healthcare, such as dementia and cancer.

Daniel Alexander

Professor Alexander is Director of UCL’s Centre for Medical Image Computing (CMIC: cmic.cs.ucl.ac.uk) and Director of Research in UCL’s Department of Computer Science. He is a computer scientist with expertise in pattern recognition, machine learning, computational modelling, medical imaging, and data analysis. He co-ordinates the Horizon 2020 EuroPOND project (www.europond.eu) and leads the EPSRC platform grant supporting CMIC’s efforts to pioneer Next Generation Healthcare Technology. He leads the Microstructure Imaging Group (MIG: mig.cs.ucl.ac.uk) and POND group (pond.cs.ucl.ac.uk) within CMIC.
