The Position: Software developer/IT Support

Hours 8.30 ? 17.30 1 hour for lunch

4 weeks holiday

Salary: £25K-£28K

Reporting directly to the Managing Director the role consists of 3 areas:

1) Software Development of the company?s VB6/VB. net/SQL Internal Systems and embedded software development for the company?s new products (C#/VB.Net): 75% time

?The company?s main internal systems run on a SQL database with a customised MS Access front end: the DB has about 180 tables + 100 views/SPs; the front end has about 300 forms and reports with code and an additional 70 code modules. The code is in Visual Basic.
?It is envisaged that the existing Access front end will be gradually replaced by a brand new front end written in VB.Net (or possibly C#.Net).
?VB .Net based software for operating in process automation and test machinery (that the company uses to test/produce its products).
?VB .Net applications for automated tracking of despatched parcels (by communicating with DHL & Fedex servers etc.)
2) Network & Server Management 15%

Managing servers:

?1 Server runs Windows SBS Server 2011 which includes Windows Server 2008, MS Exchange 2010 and MS SQL Server.
?1 Server runs MS Forefront TMG firewall
?We also run VMWare workstation: 4 x VMs are running; Fedex shipping software; DHL shipping software; Symantec Enterprise Vault (email archiving system); VMI Vehicle tracking system (for sales person vehicles.), Symantec Backup Exec (backup solution); Symantec Endpoint Protection (Client AV and FW).
?About 20 client machines mainly Windows 7
?Network cabling/switches
?Mobile Device Management (laptops, phones etc.)
3) IT Support for Personnel and Data Analysis 10%

Other than our bespoke systems we also use MS Office, Sage 200 Accounting, Solidworks 3D Design.

Preparing queries to extract data followed by analysis and reporting of the data e.g. sales figures, stock usage statistics, mailshots, marketing data, telephone billing etc.

Particular Projects planned for the next 12 months

?Write software to automatically operate an in line test machine (i.e. installed on a continuous conveyor process, that should test up to 2000 devices per day.) Likely solution will be in VB.Net or C#.Net
?Plan, write and implement upgrades to our internal operations system (SQL /VB) to allow us to move to a fully barcoded warehouse, using handheld scanners. This would include researching the appropriate hardware to use.
?Upgrade the existing Access front end to our main DB to a new front end written in VB.Net (or possibly C#.Net). This is a long term project that will take place in stages.
?Write extension modules to our internal system to provide electronic (machine readable) data exchange with key customers and suppliers.
?Research the market to select the optimum technology & then implement a secure roll out of new smartphones/pads to the sales team.
?Development of mobile apps to allow sales team to communicate more effectively with office and get real time access to data (eg stock levels).
?Migrate existing VMs to new server hardware (including specifying and purchasing the server).
?Implementing a more resilient network backup system including new disk based backup with final tape based backup.
The Person

1) Qualifications

?A degree in Computer Science, Electronic and Electrical Engineering or other closely related subjects. This post is suitable for recently or currently qualifying new graduates.
?Good knowledge and understanding of software development in VB.Net (or C# .Net)
?Knowledge and understanding of SQL.

?Good command of English language
?Ability to document and present information effectively
?Reliable and discrete when handling confidential information and managing secure systems.
