Tom Davies, MEng Computer Science

Tom Davies, MEng Computer Science

"I chose UCL Computer Science because it places a large emphasis on abstract thought and complex problem solving. This has equipped me with the skillset required to attack a problem in a logical and systematic manner. The breadth of optional subjects available and the flexibility of the course allowed me to pursue both computational mathematics and programming alongside each other, which I really enjoyed. For my final year project the department allowed me to work alongside a current research team, sharing their budget and resources. From this, I also produced a paper looking into mobile computing that was published in CHI2012 and presented in Austin, Texas - a great experience!

After graduating I gained a position as a technology consultant with BAE Systems Detica. I now use the skills I gained at UCL to solve large-scale problems for several government departments and also multiple clients in the commercial sector. Having UCL on my CV has helped to ensure that both my colleagues and my clients have an instinctual trust in the work I can deliver – it is easy to see that UCL’s reputation has travelled far beyond the Bloomsbury campus."
